welcoming the surprise visitor

I opened my door the other day and a tortoise was there, approaching the entrance of my home as if coming over for a visit. He lives in the yard but is usually confined to a barricaded area. It was a surprise to see him there.

As we live through various gradations of social isolation, our visitors might not be actual visitors. They may not be other humans coming over to our homes. Our visitors may be hand-written letters, phone calls from loved ones far away, unpredictable emotions, or that storybook on the shelf you forgot was there.

All we can count on right now is the Unknown. So why not welcome the approach of the surprise visitor?
