what inspires me to stay present

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”
– Henry David Thoreau

This is a distilled gem that also rings true in another passage from Eckhart Tolle that I’m really grooving on at the moment:

“…your entire life journey ultimately consists of the step you are taking at this moment. There is always only this one step, and so you give it your fullest attention. This doesn’t mean you don’t know where you are going; it just means this step is primary, the destination is secondary. And what you encounter at your destination once you get there depends on the quality of this one step.”
– Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth

I’ve been grooving on this deeply for quite a while now — so much so that, by the time this post goes up, I’ll have a new tattoo as a visual reminder. Every time I look at the inside of my left arm, glancing down as I sit on the computer, moving around day to day, there will be a visual reminder to be present, be in this moment. Just that one shift has the power to diffuse massive amounts of anxiety and worry.

One of the biggest shifts for me is that being present isn’t about being easy or hard — it’s not about working at it. It’s simply about being aware. Listening. Knowing what actions are possible in this single moment, choosing, and following through to the fullest of my potential. Whether that action has to do with laying the groundwork for some great new aspect of my company, or sitting in silence and enjoying the sound of the wind.

There is only this one step.
